»Come! into the open, friend!« (Friedrich Hölderlin)

We humans long for an open vastness that frees and revives us—we find ourselves in the ‘between’ of the world. Here everything is always in transition: The worldly relations and references in which we exist and live are sometimes free and widened, then suddenly narrowed, sometimes they even solidify, suddenly they start to flow again.

In all this the between’s role is active in a hidden way: It is location, space, situation and constellation, a constantly shifting ‘game’ that moves, liberates, lets things happen: the dynamic event of the revelation of all things, the invisible “Wonder of Being”, at the same time—that which “holds the world together in its innermost self.”
The ‘between’ concerns us all. As a primary phenomenon and origin in the proper sense, it allows relational closeness and distance, success and failure, the homely coziness as much as the renewed departure.

‘Im | Zwischen’ or ‘In the between’, this means: Even in supposed stillness, we human beings are incessantly on our way: Again we find ourselves in the spatiotemporal movement of life itself, constantly changing in a creative way, its meaning and archetype being the ‘between’ itself.

‘Im | Zwischen’ is the result of two works originally independent of one another. Except for the folder ‘Gedicht’ (‘poem’), the text fragments come from my philosophical study “Phenomenology of the between”: Based on Heidegger’s relational thinking, I search for the diverse manifestations of the ‘between’ in art, culture, technology and religion, while likewise designing outlines of a “phenomenology of the between”, whose task, among others, is to direct our attention to the relational basic structure of all the phenomena and situations that confront us.

At the same time, I’ve also approached the ‘between’ in a photographic manner. Each of the present images—as with the texts—play around with different aspects of the ‘between’, which never really exists in the photo, but only results from situational interaction of the individual elements of the whole for the viewer. We are not dealing with a thing or an object but rather with the “Event of Being” existent within (inter)relation and its perceptibility for us as humans: Time and space, withdrawal and connection, site and non-site come together in the Inter.

‘Im | Zwischen’ draws text and images into a relationship of mutual elucidation (or disturbance) and, at the same time, it always shines a new light on the ‘between’. The user can trust randomness or choose and combine elements himself, or he dissolves the scheme and solely looks at image or text. Found, i.e. favored combinations can be stored as a bookmark and checked again later. An exchange on the subject is desired. Contact via This email address is protected against spam bots!
